Norbert Span

Magical Beauty

Austria | Born in 1967

Macro photography offers fascinating insights into a world that affects us all: the world of health, the world of vitamins and dietary supplements. Through the lens of scientist and photographer Norbert Span, seemingly ordinary capsules filled with powder are transformed into astonishing works of visual art. Each active ingredient becomes a universe in its own right: fine structures, surface textures and colours that would otherwise remain hidden from the human eye come into sharp relief.

Norbert Span invites us on a visual journey into the structures of magnesium, calcium, vitamins C and D, CoQ10, zinc citrate, iron, selenium, copper, boron, chromium, manganese, as well as astaxanthin, frankincense and reishi. The crystalline structures of minerals or the velvety texture of powdered preparations are revealed with the utmost precision. Alongside the visual fascination of the aesthetics and diversity of the active ingredients, Span also opens up scientific perspectives: differences in structure and composition become visible, allowing conclusions to be drawn about quality, purity and solubility.

Span’s work demonstrates that macro photography goes far beyond mere representation: it raises awareness of the complexity of even the smallest objects and conveys the beauty of the microcosm. The result is imagery that is not only scientifically informative but also aesthetically striking – a symbiosis of research, art and a passion for detail. Through Span’s macro photography, micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals become protagonists in a world that otherwise remains hidden, and impressively demonstrate how science and photography can enrich one another.

Norbert Span is an Austrian scientist, glaciologist and internationally recognised photographer, known for his work in the fields of macro and astrophotography. He studied meteorology, glaciology and astronomy at the University of Innsbruck. Span is the managing owner of Team Eiswelten OG, a company primarily engaged in the development and implementation of exhibition and experiential projects, particularly in the fields of science, visualisation and presentation.
