Film tip! YANUNI – DIE STIMME DES AMAZONAS by Richard Ladkani
In cinemas from 24 April. The cinema release tour starts now.
Visitors to the La Gacilly-Baden Photo Festival will likely already be familiar with Juma Xipaia and Richard Ladkani. They will recognise the internationally acclaimed director and the courageous indigenous leader from the heart of the Amazon from Ladkani’s exhibition at the 2024 festival. Richard Ladkani will be returning to the festival in 2026 with another exhibition, and Juma Xipaia will once again feature in it.
Their joint film is set to hit cinemas on 24 April:
YANUNI – DIE STIMME DES AMAZONAS
The cinema tour across Austria has already begun; you can catch the film at venues including Cinema Paradiso in Baden. See below for screening times.
The new film by Richard Ladkani (Sea of Shadows, The Ivory Game) was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, among others, has won over twenty awards at film festivals worldwide, and is on the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature.

YANUNI – DIE STIMME DES AMAZONAS tells the story of Juma Xipaia, an indigenous leader from the heart of the Amazon who rose from environmental activism to the highest echelons of Brazilian politics: to the world’s first Ministry for Indigenous Peoples.
Whilst her husband Hugo, an agent for the Brazilian environmental agency, is cracking down on illegal gold mines, Juma navigates the tension between power, danger and motherhood – and in doing so, takes great personal risks.
Both intimate and epic, YANUNI – DIE STIMME DES AMAZONAS tells a gripping story of indigenous sovereignty, love and the urgent fight to save our planet through stunning imagery.
