Survival or collapse? “At a time when humanity seems to be constantly pushing the boundaries that stand between us and a major environmental disaster, this is a legitimate question. In Burning, the water has all gone and it’s already too late. This series takes us on a journey somewhere between reality and fiction, to explore what remains of a burning world where humanity is confronted with its own disappearance. In this dystopia, fragments, traces and memories weave the fabric of an intimate narrative and question our relationship with our planet –  on which everything is still possible.” The Burning series first took shape in Marine Lécuyer’s imagination during a trip to California. In the vast arid landscapes of the American West, where some people have no access to water, the resource really is key to survival. In fact, one of the first tips given to people crossing these regions is ’bring fuel and water’. In Burning, the photographer imagines a world where water has disappeared, forcing viewers to address their choices for the future and confirming the potential for contemporary photo-graphy to use fiction to express a committed environmental message.
