Laetitia Vancon

End of the Day

Islanders have a uniquely intimate relationship with their land. Laetitia Vancon was born in Toulouse in 1979 and began her career in photography in 2013, after having worked as a chemical engineer. For over two years, she set off to meet young people living in the Outer Hebrides off the northern tip of Scotland. And what she found there was a striking contrast between the picture-postcard landscapes of the untouched wilderness, and the challenges of island living. How can islanders thrive and find fulfilment against a backdrop of deeply embedded tradition and an economy in decline that offers very little opportunity? Torn between loyalty to their roots and the desire to leave, this dilemma weighs heavy in the minds of the young generations that, despite it all, continue striving to keep their islands afloat. As Laetitia Vancon sees it, these hopeful, vibrant young people are a reflection of our societies generally, moving at such rapid pace that they leave trails of confusion in their wake…
